Photos From the Weekend

11 Mar

I’m really sick, and really busy at work, but I wanted to fill you in with photos from the weekend really quickly:

On Friday, we went to a friend’s house to play a few games. Every time we go over there, I discover a new game I love. First, it was Taboo, then Guesstures. This time, it was Outburst. Although the boys heartily beat us, I think we need a rematch because I feel like they got easier topics than we did.

After that, we went to another friends house to hang out:

In true Kristy fashion, I only took pictures of the cat. But isn’t Thom regal?

Saturday was a busy day, and although the weather was perfect, I wasn’t able to get a run in. I had about a million things to do, including shopping for a dress for the Gala that was being held that evening as a fundraiser for the library where I work

try on

Have you been to JC Penney lately? They have really stepped up their game and have some seriously cute clothes. I did like the dress above, but settled on this:

gala outfit

The shoes and dress are from JC Penney and cost a total of $37! And I looove the dress. It’s lined, it has pockets, it’s adorable and very comfy. I’ll have a photo on here of me and Zach all dressed up soon, because his sister was kind enough to come outside and take some photos of us. It’s pretty nice having your professional photographer sister-in-law live right next door! 🙂 The sweater is clearly from Old Navy, and the earrings I bought first from Gabriel Brothers. The little orange rosettes were the inspiration behind the outfit because I liked them so much!

The Gala was very fun, but my throat started getting scratchy just before we got there.

I wish I had taken a photo of every dish, because the food was so good! My favorites were the first course, which was a black bean stew with kale served over rice, and the salad, which was mixed greens, tomatoes, onions and hearts of palm with a mango/passion fruit dressing. Yum!

After the Gala, Zach and I went to a local bar to have a couple drinks in our fancy clothes and then headed home and had some folks over to watch Saturday Night Live with Justin Timberlake — which was SO good!

By the time I woke up on Sunday, I was definitely sick. I laid in bed well after Zach had already risen for the day, and that’s a certain sign that I’m not feeling well. I did manage to get out and do an errand that had to be done (begrudgingly), and I also was able to make it over to a friend’s porch to enjoy the balmy weather:

However, I was soon back on the couch. No run for me, which was a bummer because of the awesome weather, but I know there is more to come. I’m feeling pretty bad, but I hope to be back in action by tomorrow. Unfortunately, Zach and I have a tasting with a caterer this evening. It’s a bummer I feel bad for that, but it’s not something I can cancel.

Because of the spring-like weather, I’ve been able to open the windows and enjoy the breeze, which also pleases the cats:

Hope you’re having some nice weather near you as well!

Question of the Day:
Has spring sprung where you live yet?

I Can’t Control My Eyebrow!

8 Mar

Happy Friday!

I woke up at 6:00 this morning and truly thought it was Saturday. Whomp whomp: What a bummer, right?! But that means I still have a full weekend to look forward to!

Here are some random things I’d like to talk about:

The sun came out to play today!

I just love these big, giant windows outside of my office! After two dreary, grey days, the sun has finally decided to grace us with its presence. It’s still pretty cold, but at least there is sunshine. Also, the weather forecast for the weekend looks like this:

…which means there is at least 1 outdoor run on my agenda this weekend!

In less exciting news, I think I may be coming down with a little cold. I’m definitely a little sniffly this morning. Hopefully it stops there!

Speaking of running, I’ve been really good about getting my miles in this week. I’ve done a 2 mile, 3 mile and 4 mile treadmill run so far this week. Yesterday’s four-miler is thanks to the ABC app on my phone and catching up with this week’s episode of The Bachelor: The Women Tell All.

Holy wow. Now, I just started watching The Bachelor this season, and I definitely see the appeal. It’s like a trainwreck! It’s so awkward to me. Sean will be on these intimate dates and the whole time I’m thinking, “He’s doing this with x other women….” — I just can’t see the appeal of being on that show! Watching it, however, now that’s a different story.

How about Tierra, huh? Could that girl be any more delusional? Before watching this episode, my favorite Tierra quote was:  “I can’t control my eyebrow! I can’t control everything on my face all the time!” – but now it’s, “I didn’t call you a liar, I said you lied to me.” and when someone explains to her that it’s the same thing, she says, “See? Everything I say is WRONG!” — oh man. I think it explained a lot when she said she was Little Miss Nevada when she was a child. Now we know what happens to Toddlers and Tiaras when they grow up!

I only watched through Tierra’s part and covered about 4 miles. I’m excited to finish it off, can’t wait to see what Ashlee has to say to Sean!

run walk

I noticed when I was walking back from the gym how bright it still was outside! It was almost 7 pm! After we turn our clocks forward this weekend, we will have so much daylight left in the evenings! Yay!

My Shade order arrived this week and I’m loving what I got. For how inexpensive everything was, I’m loving the quality. I wore the top above to work yesterday (sorry for the awkward selfie, I’m still working on it) and I got a lot of compliments on it. I love the trendy chevron pattern.

Ok, that’s enough random for one day!

I hope you have some nice weather this weekend wherever you are!

Question of the Day:
What are you most looking forward to this weekend?

Dreary Day

8 Feb

Happy Friday!

Honestly, I didn’t post a blog yesterday because I was feeling a little….blah. I’m still feeling pretty blah, but I have a 5-day-a-week blog goal to stick with! I will try not to impart my bad mood on you.

In fact, I would share why I was in such a bad mood, but I myself can’t put my finger on it. The past few nights I’ve had a lot of trouble falling asleep because I’m in an anxious panic over…pretty much everything. Do you ever just get that feeling that you aren’t getting enough done? Anywho, sleeping poorly leads to not wanting to get out of bed in the morning, and dreary, grey days lead to bad attitudes, and well, here we are!

I’m happy to say that my oral surgery went well. I think I’m healing pretty well, but I had some trouble eating for the first couple of days. I’m eating more solid foods now and I couldn’t be happier about that — I do not do well with being hungry! I even managed to go for a run last night after work:

As you can probably tell from the photo, I did the Deck of Cards Treadmill Workout again, and it was just as fun as last time. I really like how it’s a completely different workout each time. The weather here was perfect, but once I got done with work and changed into my workout gear, it was still too dark for an outdoor run. Luckily, I think we might just get some of that decent weather back this weekend:
weekend weather

To pump up my bummer of a mood a bit, I’ll look forward to the fact that Zach and I are going to celebrate Valentine’s Day this evening (I’ll be at a concert with some friends next weekend), with a date night I’ve been wanting to do for quite some time: Dinner at home and dessert out! I’m planning on cooking a simple meal of steak, baked potatoes and salad and then we’ll head out to Huntington Prime to have dessert. I’ve heard a lot of great things about the pastry chef at Huntington Prime, so we’re going to save some money by cooking our dinner at home first and then go out for a delicious dessert and drinks.

The other thing I’m really looking forward to is returning to Crossfit on Saturday. I reserved a spot in the 10:00 AM class tomorrow morning, and I’m looking forward to getting back into it.

Question of the Day:
What are you most looking forward to this weekend?

5 Feb

Today, I had oral surgery. I was sent to the surgeon to get one wisdom tooth that was partially impacted removed. Once I arrived, they decided to remove all of my wisdom teeth.

I'm sexy and I know it.

I’m sexy and I know it.

Zach and I left at 7:15 am to go to the Surgeon’s office. He waited for me in the waiting room, and I went back. This was the most efficiently run doctor’s office I’ve ever been to. For Huntington locals, I highly recommend Mountain State Oral Surgeons. First of all, I was able to fill out all my paperwork online prior to my appointment, so that made things go by very quickly. I was taken back, they did an x-ray of my whole mouth.

Next, they took me into my exam room, hooked me up to an EKG monitor (so I could hear my heart beat in the form of a beep). The doctor came in, introduced himself and looked at my mouth, at which time he said he suggested just going ahead and taking them all out.

Next, one of the office staff came in to discuss my payment options. The total bill was a bit of a shocker, but she said that my medical insurance will cover some of it most likely. The rest I’ll be responsible for, since I don’t have dental insurance. I went ahead and payed the bulk of the bill at that time and then they will charge my insurance and I’ll pay whatever is left after that’s taken care of.

Next, two new nurses came in to hook up my IV and give me the meds to put me to sleep. She was very nice, and they started talking about workout DVD’s, which as you know I’m very interested in, so I joined in the conversation.

This is the funny part: She said, “Ok, I’m going to put in your IV now, you’ll feel a pinch” — that’s when I heard the beep on my monitor start to speed up. Then she said, “Ok, now I’m going to give you the medicine and you’ll start to feel sleepy.” That’s when I heard the beeping on my monitor slow waaaaay down. Haha.

After that, the rest is history. Next thing I knew, I was…well, home. I vaguely remember waking up and somehow Zach was there. I know I cried because later I felt dried tears on my cheeks, but I don’t remember that. Zach said that the nurse said, “She’s not going to remember any of this, so you need to pay attention.” I also remember barely being able to walk. They pushed me to Zach’s car in a wheelchair and even once we got home, I had a lot of trouble walking to the couch.

All in all, it took an hour, tops. I was pretty amazed at how quickly it all went by. I’m in a marginal amount of pain right now. I’ve been icing my mouth, and I just took my first pain pill, so the pain is subsiding.

Let’s just talk about my fabulous fiance for a second. Once he got me settled on the couch, he went to the grocery store to fill my prescription, and also rented me a movie from the Redbox and bought me TWO kinds of ice cream. Then he came home, got me some ice cream, and then went back out to get my prescriptions. What a guy. He’s also staying home with me today, and even though we’re currently doing our own things, it’s really nice to have him here.

I’m not sure when I’ll be able to eat/talk, or go back to work….or anything, but for now I feel pretty much like laying on the couch is the extent of my activity for at least 24 hours.

Question of the Day:
Have you ever had oral surgery? Tell me all about it!

A Stellar Snowy Saturday

2 Feb

Today is great.

I usually don’t post on Saturdays, but I’m having such a great day that I had to check in.

Today started with an amazing run! The weather is treacherous here, so I had to run on the treadmill. I didn’t necessarily plan to do 5 miles today, but that’s what happened:

My gym’s treadmills only go to 42 minutes, so I had to start over. I watched The Lorax while I was running, and it was so cute!

I’ve never run that long/far on the treadmill, ever. I don’t know what came over me, but I was feeling great. I still don’t know how people like Janae from The Hungry Runner Girl do it, but I’m pretty sure she’s superhuman because she was running 10 miles on her treadmill while she was 8 months pregnant. I just get so…restless! Watching a movie helps.

After my run, I came home to shower quickly because Zach and I had plans! We had originally planned to go to the mall and the movies, but the weather looked like this:

….so we decided to stay in town. Luckily, there is a different movie theater less than a mile from our house. First, brunch was in order:

Oh, brunch. Zach and I hit up Black Sheep Burritos & Brews, which we hadn’t done in quite some time. My very favorite part about their brunch is that for $8 extra, you can get all you can drink Mimosas or Bloody Marys with your brunch! We didn’t take advantage today, because I didn’t want to snooze through the movie. I did chow down on some Huevos Rancheros that was to die for and two cups of yummy coffee.

After brunch, we went to see Silver Linings Playbook now that I’ve finished the book. They changed a lot for the movie!! I liked the movie, but I was confused about some of the changes they made.

After the movie, we had a couple drinks and then went to get some orange juice so I can have mimosas later, since I missed out on them at brunch.

What a fabulous, snowy Saturday!

Question of the Day:
How’s your Saturday going so far?

Things I’m Excited About

30 Jan

1. Only 10 minutes until the end of the workday, and tonight I’m going to watch Paranormal Activity 4! Finally! I love those movies so much.

2. My alma mater (Marshall University) just posted their 2013 football schedule. I was nervous about this, because I was afraid there would be a home game scheduled on our wedding day, however:

…we lucked out!! Not only is there no home game, but there is no Marshall game at all. This is great, because most of our guests are Marshall fans!

3. Yesterday, upon recommendation of an Instagram friend, I discovered this little gem:

graze…a subscription box service that sends you a week’s worth of snacks for $5/week. They are running a promotion where your first and fifth week are free, so I eagerly signed up. I’m super excited to get my first box! I don’t know if I’ll be able to afford it forever, but I’m going to keep up with it for the 5 weeks and give an honest review here.

3. My wedding earrings arrived last week, broken. 😦

I think I've decided on an updo to show off these incredible earrings.

This is the non-broken one!

However, I dropped them off at the jewelry store near my office, and they fixed them for me! For $5! Woot!

4. I realized this morning how awesome my new Old Navy bright orange sports bra looks layered under the bubble tank:

cute5. …and just like that, I’ve successfully killed the last 10 minutes of work. See you tomorrow!

Question of the day:
What are you excited about!?

Mondays Get a Bad Rap

28 Jan

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t always give Monday the benefit of the doubt.

Waking up to that alarm after two days of waking up naturally is a bummer. Getting out of my warm bed and into the shower, rushing around to get breakfast ready for everyone, pets included, and going out into the cold to head to work for 8 hours after 2 days of doing whatever I want — not fun.

And, also, Mondays are always especially hard at work. Work has built up over the weekend (my workplace is open 7 days a week, so even when I’m not here over the weekend, something ends up on my desk), and there is always a lot of stuff to catch up on.

Here are the 3 things that are making me ready to tackle this Monday, and subsequent week, with a smile:

1. A yummy breakfast:

This weekend wasn’t the best for healthy eating. I tried to stay on track, but I had a few extra beers and a few less-than-perfect meals. Oh well. Loading up on fruit and a bit of whole grains should make up for it. I packed a banana, some yogurt, the bagel and the apple, but I found some leftover fruit in the fridge at work from a program this weekend. Melon isn’t exactly in season, but it was still yummy.

2. A great weekend with friends!

Zach and I had a great weekend. We got to hang out with friends a lot, and he and I had some great quality time together. It was fabulous 🙂

Zach enjoying a lazy double cat Saturday morning.

Zach enjoying a lazy double cat Saturday morning.

3. A good weekend of fitness!

Although I was feeling a bit under the weather this weekend, I did manage to get some fitness in. I went to my very first Crossfit class ever! Here was the WOD:

8 minute AMRAP (as many reps as possible):
15 Wall Balls
15 Kettlebell Swings
15 ring pull ups

…8 minutes? That’s it!? Uh, yeah, that was the most intense 8 minutes of my life. The class started out with some intense foam rolling and stretching that my legs definitely needed, then we moved on to learning form with deadlifts. Finally, it was time to do the WOD. My AMRAP? 2. Yep, only 2. But that’s 30 Wall Balls, 30 Kettlebell Swings, and 30 ring pull ups (modified) in 8 minutes. I’m pretty proud of myself, and boy was I sore the next day!

Yesterday, I spent most of the day helping Courtney set up for the Bridal Expo, and attending it myself (I’ll talk more about that in my Wedding Wednesday post this week). Since I didn’t want to spend 7 hours at the Expo, after I helped with set-up, paid my admission and scoped out the vendors, I went home for lunch. When it was about an hour before ending time, I put on my running clothes and went for a run around town, ending at the Civic Center. I helped Courtney and her partner Mark break down their table and then finished my run, ending up at a Yoga for Runner’s class at Studio 8 yoga. I’m not going to go much into that class, because while it was a great class, they were having their one year anniversary and the class was much too packed for my liking. I got there early so I ended up with my mat smack dab in the middle of the studio, packed with other yogis like sardines around me, with no escape route. That really got my anxiety level up, so I didn’t quite enjoy my practice like I usually do.

However, my run put at 14 miles for the week, and 49.62 for the month of January so far. That means I only have to run .4 miles before February 1st to reach my 50 mile goal for the month! Hooray!

This past week's mileage.

This past week’s mileage.

Also, I’m looking forward to my next Crossfit class, tomorrow at 6:15 AM!

There you go! The top 3 reasons I’m not going to let this Monday bring me down!

Question of the Day:
How are you going to avoid letting Monday bring you down?

22 Jan

First of all, it is cold here!

I decided this morning that staying in my warm bed was preferable to walking to the gym in 7 degree weather. Brr!

I apologize in advance, this post is going to be all kinds of randomness:

We’re officially done with the toughest part of the week, hooray! I also got my week out to a good start yesterday with a nice treadmill run of 3.25 miles. Racking up those miles! I’m working on a graphic for my 600 mile goal in 2013, look for it at the end of January (I’ll be officially logging my miles by month).

Somehow, I managed to chip my very back bottom tooth on Saturday. It is driving me crazy! The tooth itself doesn’t hurt, but it’s got a jagged edge and it’s scraping my tongue. It’s hard to talk and eat, but you know I won’t let anything stop me from eating:

A delicious and filling desk breakfast consisting of half a whole-wheat bagel with neufchatel, half a banana and half a pear with yogurt. Yum. The bagel was particularly hard to eat with the tooth issue, but I managed. I think I’m going to venture out in the world today and look for some soup for lunch. I have a dentist appointment next week.

I found out some exciting fitness-related news yesterday. The YMCA to which I am a member has introduced a Crossfit-type class!

Actually, I have known this was coming for a while, but I just noticed the schedule on the wall yesterday. You have to reserve your spot in the class, because there is only room for 10 participants per class. You can sign up for a class only 3 days in advance, so today I called and reserved a spot in the Friday at 6:30 PM class. I’m nervous and excited! While this class isn’t called “Crossfit”, I know from word of mouth that they have set up a separate section of the gym for this class, and we’ll be doing intense workouts consisting of olympic lifts, and Crossfit style “Workouts of the Day”.  I’m excited because I’ve always wanted to try Crossfit, but it’s just out of my price range. The box in my town charges between $100 and $200 a month, and that is just not doable for me at this point. Not to mention, the box is all the way across town and it’s hard enough to get to the gym that is two blocks away from my house. After Friday’s class, I’ll do a full review here.

And, finally, in other news, I’ve started to follow Weight Watchers again.  A few friends are following it and finding great success, and I’ve also been very successful on the program in the past (I lost the vast majority of my weight following Weight Watchers). Now, I think in the healthy-living community, weight loss can be a touchy subject. I will say that the reason I’m looking to lose a few pounds is because I’m up about 10 pounds from my happiest weight. I think the thing I like the most about the Weight Watchers program is that really is a lifestyle, not a diet. It teaches you to eat regular food in a way that will help you lose or maintain your weight. I just think I’ve lost some of the lessons I learned from Weight Watchers, and I’m hoping to regain them.

So, I bought this little notebook:

..and I’ll be tracking points starting today. It has been hard for me to follow a weight loss plan recently, and hopefully Weight Watchers will do for me what it once did. The great thing about Weight Watchers for me is that I followed the plan for so long, I don’t feel the need to pay for it again, I still have my knowledge of the program and I’ll just use that rather than buying an online membership. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Question(s) of the Day:
What did you have for breakfast today? Have you ever chipped a tooth? Have you ever tried to lose weight, and if so, what worked for you?

“Wild” Wednesday!

16 Jan

This week is going by quickly! Last week was the first full 5-day work week for me in a while because of the holidays, and it felt like it went by so slowly. This week is flying by, which is a good thing!

Has the weather been terrible where you live? It has been so rainy and grey here the past few days. I’m ready for some sunshine! Luckily, it looks like things are going to shape up just in time for the weekend:

That’s great news, because I’m really looking forward to my next run with Margot. Looks like I should shoot for Saturday, based on the forecast above.

I slept restlessly last night, so when my alarm went off this morning to go to the gym, I wasn’t exactly raring to go. I lay in bed fighting myself for a while, but I knew I had to get up and get moving. After a stellar day of fitness on Monday, I wasn’t able to make it to the gym yesterday. After work, I had an appointment to get my hair cut, and then Zach and I hit up the grocery store because the cupboards were bare. By the time I got home, I was starving and I knew I wouldn’t be able to get in my workout.

This morning, the plan was to run. I haven’t logged any  miles at all this week, and although I had a great week last week, I need to keep up the mileage if I’m going to reach my goal of 600 miles in 2013! It was rainy and cold when I headed out to the gym, and once I got there, I realized I had forgotten my phone and headphones. There was no way I was going to run on the treadmill without music, so I hit up my Cardio Fusion class instead. I’m glad I did, it was a great workout, but I hope I’ll be able to get on the treadmill this evening and log some miles.

I tried something different with breakfast this morning. One thing I know that I need to do is give my muscles some protein after my workout, and I’m guilty of just waiting until I get to work to eat. So, right after the gym,  I tried out a sample of  Click Espresso Protein powder that I had.

From the Click website

From the Click website

It was good! I’m not 100% certain I love the ingredient list. I haven’t had time to research all the ingredients, but it was tasty and had 13 grams of protein. I blended the powder with some cold coffee leftover from yesterday, about a quarter cup of vanilla almond milk and a whole banana. It was certainly tasty, and very coffee flavored, especially since I added some brewed coffee to it.

When I got to work, I had the other part of my breakfast, half a whole-wheat bagel with neufchatel cheese, some vitamins and a glass of water:

I am very sporadic about taking vitamins! I have made resolutions to take my vitamins more often again and again and I always end up forgetting. However, I do notice that my general mood is much better when I remember to take my Vitamin D, especially when the weather is as yucky as it has been. So, I’ll try to remember it more often. I’m afraid this breakfast won’t keep me satisfied until lunch, so I tucked an apple in my purse to munch on in a bit if I need it.

Let’s get to the title of this post!

I recently finished the book Wild by Cheryl Strayed, and I wanted to talk a bit about it here.

I love the subtitle of this book: “From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail” — once you’ve read the book, it’s quite appropriate. My friend Ashley lent me this book way back in the summer, and I’ve been a terrible friend and kept it laying around for quite some time. I read the first chapter and set it aside for a few months. I picked it up again after the holidays were over, and pretty much devoured it.

After the death of her mother and her divorce, Cheryl Strayed was lost. Without giving away too much, she went through a very rough time, and participated in a lot of self-destructive behavior. Her mother was basically the glue of her family, so after her death, it seemed the whole family fell apart. While at an REI store to buy a snow shovel, Cheryl spots a guide book about the Pacific Crest Trail, and thus begins her journey.

Cheryl decides, despite her lack of hiking experience, that she will traverse the Pacific Crest Trail, alone, from the Mojave desert to Washington State. She buys all her supplies, packs boxes to be mailed to herself at various stops along the way, and hitches a ride to the trail — with a pack roughly half her weight.

Her journey, while mostly uneventful as  this review from the New York Times notes, is incredible. I was inspired by Cheryl’s journey. While it’s true, she didn’t encounter too much trouble, other than her inexperience, her journey will inspire you.

I think my favorite part about this book was her honesty. It’s raw — there are things in this book that will make you cringe, but it’s that honesty that makes you really feel for her as she learns the way of the PCT. I felt her heavy pack and her yearning for the love of her mother.

Question of the Day:
Tell me a good book you’ve read recently.

Date Night

6 Jan

Last night, Zach and I went on a date.

I try to dress relatively nice for date nights. I was trying an experiment with the scarf. Not sure if it worked, but I committed to it and wore it all night.

Zach laughed as I was scrolling through my camera later in the evening, at the sheer amount of photos I took when I was photographing my outfit.

I’m not really good at taking photos of myself just yet, so I just take a ton and hopefully something sticks.

We went to see This is 40. I really loved it, a whole lot. I already plan on purchasing it on Bluray and watching it over and over again. I looked at some reviews of the movie online, and listened to some reviews from people who I know who have seen it, and I get the feeling that everyone else just liked it — the critics are split 50/50. Some of the negative reviews I’ve heard is that it is just about spoiled white people whining about their lives, but I just really thought it was honest. You can be good looking, have beautiful kids and live in a great house, and not have it all together. It may not be for everyone, but for me it struck a chord in my heart and so I was in love.

After the movie, we went to Outback and sat at the bar. I took my camera with me in my purse, but I’m not a brave blogger yet, and I didn’t whip it out to photograph my food. How do you bloggers do it? I feel so weird photographing everything in public. I’ll get there. Anyway, I will recycle this old photo, because I got the same thing as last time:

2012-11-17 20.45.08

Mmmm, Ahi Tuna!

After we ate, we met some friends out at a bar for some drinks. Here is a photo of my friend Mooney playing pool:

We had a great time! I love date night. We don’t do it very often, and sometimes we just have at home date nights. It’s something to look forward to!

One more thing I want to mention:

On Friday, I got my Greatist shirt in the mail (along with some cool stickers), which they sent me as part of my Ambassadorship with Greatist. It’s such a great shirt!

It’s a slim fit shirt (I got a size medium) made of soft cotton. It doesn’t ride up when I’m working out, and it’s really comfortable. The print on the front is super cute and I’ve gotten quite a few compliments on it so far.

It’s a fun shirt to wear to the gym! You can get one here.

Question of the day:
Where did you go on your last date?
