I Need to Run 37 Miles in 12 Days

18 Jun

Running.

With the Crossfit On Ramp classes taking up 4 days a week, going out of town this past weekend, wedding planning and trying to buy a home, June hasn’t quite been the powerhouse of mileage that I had hoped it would be. I’d really like to be at 300 miles by the end of June, so that my goal of 600 miles in 2013 is pretty on track. Especially since I have a fun out of town trip planned for the 4th of July, and then we’ll be moving shortly after that, and then we will be on vacation, and then we will be getting married — there are a lot of running distractions planned for this summer/fall!

Just keep this in mind, Kristy.

Noted.

So far I’ve done about 24 miles in June, which is decent considering all that has been going on. It’s been pretty rainy as well! I was lucky enough to get almost three miles in yesterday because of a quickie run before Crossfit and a mile of running between the warm up and the WOD. We also played a really fun game that I’d love to share with you.

One of our WOD skills was burpees, and while going over form, Coach Zack turned on The Police song, Roxanne and our task was to do a burpee every time they said Roxanne. Try it! It seems pretty easy until you get to the chorus ūüôā

After that it was a pretty tough WOD: 15 dead-lift high pulls with a kettlebell, 15 burpees and a 400 meter run — 3 times. Doing 400 m after 15 burpees is pretty rough, let me tell you. I’m actually really looking forward to going to Crossfit each day. I have a 5k planned this weekend, and I think I’m just going to go ahead and go to Crossfit afterwards. I could make up the Saturday class, but I always really enjoy a marathon workout session on Saturday, so I think I’ll bike to the 5k, run, then bike to Crossfit for the WOD, then bike home. Then take a huge nap and eat all the food I can put in my stomach. Sounds like a perfect Saturday to me!

Speaking of the 5k on Saturday, I’m so pumped:

wv 5k

The WV 5k Championship is a race I’ve done for the past few years, and I can’t miss it! This year, I was online to register as soon as registration opened so I could get the free tech-t upgrade. The past two years, my times have been:

2011: 27:31
2012: 27:28

So, at least I’m consistent. I’ve really stepped up my running this year, though, and I’ve been running 5k’s nearly that fast just in training, so I’m anticipating a PR this year! Fingers crossed!¬†I may even try to pace myself to a 1 minute PR and see how that goes.

So, this is a random post!

Question of the Day:
Any races coming up?

#600in2013, #RWRunStreak and YouTube Workouts

3 Jun

I love challenges. My goal to run 600 miles in 2013 is going really well, and as usual Runner’s World is hosting their Running Streak, which I always love to participate in. However, I’ve had a lot going on and didn’t really get into it until now, so I’ve missed a few days, but I’m going to stick to it from now on.

600 miles in 2013 may

That brings my grand total for 2013 to 238.5 miles (give or take) — I’d really like to bring my June mileage up to 60+ miles to hit that 300 mile mark at the end of June — putting me right on track for the 600 miles! It shouldn’t be too hard to do, I’ve been increasing my long run mileage pretty steadily so I’ve got some longer runs in my future. Participating in the #RWRunStreak should help too — because on days I wouldn’t normally be running I will be trying to get at least a mile in. For example, this morning I was in the mood to peruse some workouts on YouTube, but first I went outside and ran a mile first.

After a quick mile, I did 2 Blogilates workouts (Victoria Secret Abs and the Psy Gentleman workout) and the Tone It Up Bridal Babe workout. I don’t always do YouTube workouts, but there are so many great resources! I’d say that Blogilates and Tone It Up are my favorite, because they offer full-length workouts which you can follow along with, but I also really like Amanda Russell and Sarah Dussault (Sarah Fit on YouTube) — they both are great resources for workouts you can do away from your computer, whether in the gym or outdoors. I ended up getting a great workout and it took less than an hour!

Question of the Day:
Do you ever do workouts on YouTube? Who are your favorite trainers?

#600in2013

1 May

Well, it’s May!

Is 2013 flying by or what!? I feel like it was JUST the beginning of April.

Anywho, I wanted to share my current progress in my goal to run 600 miles in 2013:

600 miles in 2013 april

I can’t seem to get past that 50 mile mark since January!! Things have been crazy busy, so that’s why. But, if I keep running at my current pace, I’ll only come in about 50 miles short. SO all I have to do is bump up my mileage by 6 miles each month to meet my goal — that’s a mile a day. I can do it!!

Question of the day:
Are you sticking with your goals for 2013?

Speed

24 Apr

This post isn’t about drugs.

Good news! I’m getting faster! I really thought my pace was done forever after my injury in the half marathon in November, but my goal of reaching 600 miles in the year of 2013 has done great things for my performance. I’ve noticed that my ‘comfortable’ pace is well under 10 minutes/mile and when I push it, I can hold an 8 – 8:30 pace for a while.

I pushed my pace on yesterday’s run, and good thing I did, because when I was done, I got this little gem:

2013-04-24 13.24.25

…and then Shalane Flanagan congratulated me. No big deal. Of course I played her congratulations message about 10 times in a row.

I’m really enjoying outdoor running — the weather has been perfect. However, we’re having a chilly, breezy and rainy day today and surprisingly I’m a little excited at the prospect of getting back on the treadmill this evening. I spent the first three months of the year cursing the damn treadmill, so I was pretty surprised to be looking forward to it. I think I’ll do some inclines tonight — that’s something I’ve shied away from in the past, but I really need to start doing more hill work. It will definitely benefit me in the long run. If you want to become a stronger and faster runner, you’ve got to head for the hills.

In other news, I completed my first week of Weight Watchers!

weight

I didn’t really lose 4.6 pounds. When I signed up for Weight Watchers, I was laying in bed and I estimated my starting weight, so I was about a pound and a half off, but 3 pounds is great, and to be honest I don’t think I was as careful with tracking as I should have been. Please ignore the fact that I only have 3 points left for the day. I still have a workout to go, and my boss took me out to lunch today.

I also submitted my weigh in for Sarah’s Diet Bet. I can’t believe the pot of money up for grabs is over $13,000! This is probably the largest Diet Bet I’ve seen. You still have time to jump in if you’re interested. $35 to buy into the game, and if you lose 4% of your body weight, you’ll definitely get that back!

So everything is going well! I’m glad to be participating in Weight Watchers and the Diet Bet, because when workouts don’t happen, I don’t feel as bad when my eating is under control.

Question of the Day:
What are you doing to keep your health in check this Spring?

Turn That Frown Upside Down

1 Apr

I woke up on the wrong side of bed this morning. I slept great, however, I woke up and couldn’t get it together. I took the puppy outside, fed him and played with him and then before I knew it was time to go to work. I hadn’t made breakfast, my hair was only halfway dry and I was¬†not¬†in a good mood. I’m having some trouble coordinating my mornings with Mr. Franklin. I really need to make a morning schedule and stick with it. Because I was hurrying to work with a wet head and I had to buy breakfast which has been a regular¬†occurrence¬†lately.

I’m trying to shake my no good, terrible mood because I know my day won’t get better until I do.

Let’s talk running, shall we? It’s time for a #600in2013 update!

600 miles in 2013 March

I once again failed to hit that 50 mile marker for the month. Sigh! Considering the weather we’ve had this March, I’m not really surprised. I clocked a total of 2.39 outdoor miles all month! Looks like the weather is starting to finally warm up, so I’m sure I’ll be pounding the pavement in no time. This brings my 2013 total to 141.46 miles — 8.54 miles short of the 150 miles I should have for this quarter, but I’m really not worried about it. I have a few 5k and 10k races planned in the spring, summer and fall, so training alone will make up some miles. One thing that the #600in2013 challenge has taught me is to get out there get those miles in. If I ended up at the end of the year short of my 600 mile goal, I might be bummed, but the good thing is even if I lose, I win, because all this running definitely has its benefits. For example, I’ve noticed that¬†I’m getting faster! All this treadmill time makes it easy to monitor my pace, and I’ve noticed my fitness level increasing quite a bit. I can hold faster paces for longer amounts of time and my walk breaks have become rare. I’m really seeing benefits from all this running! I like it!

One goal I have for April is to get some strength training workouts in beyond Crossfit. I’ve been counting on Crossfit for all my strength training, and that’s no good. I need to keep up with a full body strength session a couple times a week after my run, so I’ll focus on doing that this month.

Question of the Day:
What’s a good source for full-body strength workouts?¬†

#600in2013 Update

1 Mar

Welp, it’s March 1st. I swear, 2013 is going by faster than most years because it knows I have a wedding to plan.

This morning, I ran the slowest 3 miles ever. I just could not get into it, I kept stopping or taking walking breaks:

treadmill

..it was rough. I can’t wait to run outside again, but the first weekend of March looks like it’s going to go right along with that whole “In like a lion…” thing (hopefully March will stay true to the end of that saying as well):

weather…yuck. Can I please just have some sun!? I don’t mind running in mid-to-high 30’s weather as long as there is some sun!

I’m also signed up for a Crossfit class tonight, so two workouts equals two breakfast (science, people). I made some more matzoh brei¬†and then had ¬†bowl of cinnamon Life cereal with almond milk while I sat at my desk:

cinnamon life

Cinnamon Life tastes like my childhood. It was always our favorite cereal growing up.

So. It’s time to update my #600in2013 graphic! Woo!

600 miles in 2013 February

..for grand total of 92.92 miles. I’m about 7 miles short of my goal, but I’m not worried about it. When I’m able/willing to run outside again, I’ll be doing more long runs on the weekends, so I’ll make that up in no time. For now, 93 miles in 2 months is pretty good! When I was looking at my Daily Mile profile to add up my miles, I noticed that I was logging about 5 runs a week in January (when I went over my goal of 50 miles), but only logging about 3 runs a week in February, when I fell a little short of my goal. To me, it is clear that I should be shooting for about 4 runs/week to meet my 50 mile/month goal. It can be tough when I’m doing Crossfit 2x/week to do that, but I’ll give it a try this month and see how it works out.

And finally, for something completely random that I just had to share!

I was pretty excited when dry shampoos started showing up on store shelves, because it’s pretty common knowledge that it’s not terribly healthy for your hair to wash it every day. I’ve always longed to be one of those girls whose hair looks better on the second day, but I’m just not. If I don’t wash my hair exactly every 24 hours, it’s an oil slick and it looks terrible. So, when dry shampoos started coming onto the scene, I was super excited. However, I’ve had the worst time finding one that actually works on my hair. The Tresemme brand makes my second day hair look worse if that is even possible.

Anywho, I recently purchased this:

dry shampoo

It actually makes my hair look better on the second day than it did the first! It makes it look clean and even a little textured, which I need considering my hair is so fine.

Question of the Day:
How often do you wash your hair?
