Cincinnati Flying Pig Half Marathon

Hello! As I type this, it is now 72 hours since I’ve finished the Flying Pig Half Marathon, and my legs are still sore! If there is one thing I can tell you about the Flying Pig it’s this: It’s pretty hilly.

But let’s rewind a bit. On Saturday, Zach and I woke up bright and early and hit the road for the three hour drive to Cincinnati. Our plan was to get there early and hit the zoo before checking into the hotel.   The weather was sunny and warm with a slight chill to the wind, which made it perfect zoo weather. When we were waiting in line to pay for our tickets, I was regretting not bringing my jacket, but once we were walking around I was fine.

I love the Cincinnati Zoo! That was my first time there, and it was a lot better than some others I have been to. The animals seemed more relaxed. I know there is a bit of controversy about the Zoo in general, but I can’t help but love it. 10333426_10100900153826733_2115547184449372019_o The tulips were beautiful!

My favorite part of the zoo was probably the gorillas, followed closely by the giraffes. Their was a baby giraffe, but the line to see her was very long and you couldn’t get a good glimpse of her because she was inside a building, but once you got beyond the line, you saw the male giraffe out in the yard.

At some points, he was so close that I felt like I could reach out and touch him! I had never seen a giraffe up close before and my friend said it best: They look like aliens! It’s so neat to see an animal that looks nothing like any other animal you’ve seen before. I also really liked the polar bear. He was a distinguished gentleman:

I was so sad when it was time to leave! But the clock was ticking. I had to head to the Expo to pick up my bib. That’s when the nerves started. I was feeling incredibly nervous about the race. This was my first “big” race. Overall for all the events, there were over 36,000 participants! Once I grabbed my bib, we headed over to the Expo. One thing I was very grateful for was having my friend Shannon by my side. As nervous as I was, I might have had a heart attack if I didn’t have a friend there that I knew would be with me every step of the way!

After the expo, we had some dinner and then Shannon and Ben headed to the hotel while Zach and I met up with some other friends at a bar called Arnold’s. This bar was voted one of the top ten bars in the country by Esquire Magazine and I could definitely see why! It is over 150 years old and has the best patio I’ve ever seen.

It was almost like we were sitting in a little French bistro or something. There was a jug band playing called the Cincinnati Flying Pigs, which seemed appropriate. However, I wasn’t able to stay long — I had to get to bed because I had an early wake up time! _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The race started at 6:30 AM, so Shannon and I set our alarms for 5. I had no trouble getting up (I never do on race day, the anticipation is too high), but my nerves were still going strong. I had my outfit out, so I put that on and proceeded to try to prep my IT band for the run. If I haven’t mentioned it, I have IT band pain on long runs for the past few years so I was trying everything I could to keep that at bay. I rolled out a bit, rubbed some topical pain relief on it and used an IT Band strap like this:

Spoiler alert: It didn’t really help at all. After that, we left the hotel and headed toward the starting line, which was a little less than a mile from our hotel. Our plan was to grab breakfast on our walk to the starting line, which was a huge rookie mistake. That would have been fine if the race had started at 8, but with a 6:30 start time there isn’t anything open to grab breakfast. We slowly made our way to the Millennium Hotel, where we had planned to meet up with a friend from Huntington who was doing the full marathon, so we just hoped they would have  something there –  I was thinking a vending machine with a soda and a granola bar would have worked for me! Luckily, when we got to the hotel, there was a makeshift breakfast bar in the lobby for race participants! Score!

Once we were fueled, we used the bathroom a couple of times (nerves!) and waited for Meghan to come down (she was staying at the Millennium).

Oh, and I should mention: Meghan wasn’t just running the full marathon, she also had done the 4-Way challenge, which means she ran a 5k AND a 10k on Saturday followed by the full marathon on Sunday — yeah, she’s pretty much a rock star. After parting ways with Meghan, Shannon and I headed toward the starting line.

Once we found the starting line, we walked and walked and walked trying to get to our corral (E). I have no idea what the proper way to get to your corral was, but people were climbing over the fences. I knew I would hurt myself trying that, so luckily somebody had opened up a gate at the E corral and we slipped in. There were so many people around us!

With that many people, I thought it would take us a long, long time to get to the starting line, but the race started really quickly once we were in our corral and once the sea of people started moving, before we knew it, we were at the starting line and started running.

One really cool thing about the Flying Pig is you get to run through two states.

Not long after crossing into Kentucky, we saw Meghan again! We thought that was pretty cool, so she took a photo. Then she told us that she was keeping a slow pace, so if she caught up with us again, she would make us run faster. I was glad not to see her again! Ha!

Ok, after getting back into Ohio, I kind of lost it. My IT band strap kept slipping (Pro tip: Don’t wear one of those on your bare skin. When you sweat, it slips right off). I could feel my IT band tightening up and I had to keep adjusting my strap. Plus, I could see those famous Flying Pig hills formulating in front of my face. I had to make Shannon stop to stretch a few times, and then we started the longest climb of my life.

Not kidding, you guys, I feel like we climbed a hill for 8 miles. I’m pretty sure it was 2.5-4 miles, but it was about 85% uphill. I was in tears and shouting curse words at one point. It was definitely not my best moment. Shannon kept me going, though! She’s amazing! I found myself being consumed by negative thoughts. I could feel the nagging pain in my IT band starting to bother me and the hills just didn’t end. It was rough. I could tell Shannon wasn’t struggling nearly as much as I was, and I knew it was the difference in our attitude, so basically I got myself through it by thinking about seeing my husband after the race, getting that medal, and drinking a beer. I just kept repeating “You can do this” in my head and thinking of putting that medal around my neck. It definitely helped!

Our friend Sarah told us to stop and take a photo at the highest point in the race, and the best way to express the never-ending hills is to show you these two photos, taken 30  minutes apart. The first one is where I thought the highest point was and the second one is actually the highest point.

After all the hills, all of the sudden there was an amazing downhill portion. It was about half a mile downhill, and although I normally don’t enjoy running downhill, I can’t tell you how amazing it felt to just let gravity pull me for a while. My IT band stopped hurting and I felt exhilarated!

Once we got on flat ground again, we ran through town and I was struggling a little again. We were at mile 11 or so, and I was just ready to be done. My knee started hurting again and I was just tired, but I wouldn’t let myself stop running. Shannon and I stopped talking and I just kept saying, “I can do this” over and over again. Finally, I ripped off my IT Band strap and miraculously, my knee stopped hurting. I just ran. We were on a straight away at this point, and there were spectators everywhere so I knew we were close. I just kept my eyes peeled for the “Finish Swine” as they call it and we finally saw it! It was glorious! We held hands at the finish and raised our hands above our head and just smiled! It felt so awesome to be done!

We grabbed our medals and headed through the recovery area to the finish line party. There was all kinds of food available for us for free, but nothing looked good to me. I saw Swiss Cake Rolls, which I thought looked good but I took one bite and threw it away. At this point, my knee was hurting so badly that I was limping so we made a bee line for the medical tent and I texted Zach that we were there. A very nice medic gave me a huge bag of ice and wrapped it tightly around my knee and we met up with our husbands.

After we got to the Finish Line party, I bought a chili dog and a beer. Two things have never tasted so delicious!

After that, we had to walk to our hotel. I can’t tell you how much that hurt! My knee was throbbing and it was a long walk. But, I really think that helped cut down on my soreness (although I was pretty sore for the past couple of days).

On the way home, I checked my email for our finish time. It’s definitely the slowest half marathon that I’ve done, but with all the hills, I’m pretty proud of that time. I can’t wait to run the (flat!) Marshall Half this November!

 

 

What I Ate Wednesday!

As I type this, I’m on hold with Customer Service, because I ordered some Christmas gifts from a website and accidentally didn’t change the shipping address to my parent’s house (where I will be starting the 22nd!)

I try my hardest to avoid going to stores (other than local businesses) because I hate the crowds, but apparently calling Customer Service is just as bad! I’ve been sitting on the phone for close to 20 minutes now!

On to the post! I thought I’d do another WIAW, this time the right way (I documented yesterday’s eats)!

After the oatmeal debacle of last week, I’ve been back to eating eggs for breakfast:

..plus a piece of sausage and half of a whole-wheat bagel with neufchatel. I really think that the Kroger brand 100% whole wheat bagels are the best. Have you had them?

Lunch yesterday was so so good. I had some manager’s special Brussels Sprouts in my fridge that needed to be cooked, so I sauteed them and half a sweet potato in some oil. I put it on top of some leftover rice from our taco night the other night, and squirted a ton of Sriracha all over it:

It was a huge, delicious and healthy lunch! Win! I followed it up with a Kind of Healthy cookie! This lunch really powered  me through the afternoon. I usually get a huge case of the 3 pm munchies, but I was pretty satisfied all afternoon. I did munch on an apple around 4:30, because Zach had a haircut after work and I knew dinner would be a little later.

We had burger night for dinner! It’s one of my favorite nights (I think Zach agrees). We always have baked french fries, because we love them. I tried a new veggie burger recipe last night. I had some already cooked lentils in the fridge, so I just ground them up in the food processor, added egg, Parmesan cheese, spices and breadcrumbs. It made a very dense burger:

…with roasted Brussels a beer on the side! We watched some Christmas movies last night — two of my favorites: Love Actually (soooo good!) and Bad Santa (hilarious!) Zach’s sister Courtney and her boyfriend Justin came over, and their brought their Doberman “puppy”, Margot!

I wish this picture weren’t so dark, but we had the mood lighting going. Having Margot at our apartment is kind of like having a bull in a china shop. She’s still a puppy, but she’s as big as a full grown dog, so she just bounces around like crazy and it’s pretty funny. My cats aren’t very dog-friendly (I’m hoping this will change when we get a small puppy and it’s around all the time), so we put up a baby gate to restrict Margot to the living room. She brings a toy, and she wants you to chase her, so when we watch a movie, she spends most of her time bringing her toy to each individual person and setting it on them. As soon as you try to grab it, she takes it back and runs. If you really ignore her, she will place the toy in your hand to really try to get the game going. It’s adorable.

So, all in all it was a good night.

Date Night, and An Exciting Announcement

Last night, Zach and I had an “At Home Date Night”

It was so fun! First, I decided on a “Cocktail of the Evening”:

I’m definitely going to make these again this weekend, but I’m going to change things up a bit. First, I’m going to use a better bourbon. That bourbon is just left over from our beach trip. Next, I need to get some new honey because mine has gotten hard, I had to heat it up to loosen it. Finally, I think I’ll shake the bourbon, lemon juice and honey over ice, but I won’t serve the drink over ice. I think it watered it down too much.

We also started things off with a little appetizer:

 

The Everything Pretzel Crisps are my favorite. Paired with Sabra Supremely Spicy Hummus it was a dream. After a few bites, we put it away so we didn’t ruin our dinner:

 

I made London Broil, roasted mixed veggies (broccoli, carrots and cauliflower) and mashed caulipots (one potato and a bag of steamed cauliflower with butter, salt and pepper). Yes, we doubled up on the cauliflower! It was a very tasty dinner. I wish I had gotten my flowers in the photo — they have held up very well since Sunday. Although, I did catch Penny eating them this morning. After a quick Google search to be sure Gerber daisies aren’t poisonous to cats, I put them in our bedroom. While we ate, we watched a movie I picked up at Redbox called Hick:

Photo from Wikipedia. It was pretty good. Chloe Moretz is probably my favorite actor under the age of 25. Last night I tweeted that she’s the best child actress since Jodie Foster. I can’t wait to see what she does as she gets older. Blake Lively was very good in this movie too.

After all of that, we were in bed embarrassingly early. I guess that’s what cocktails before dinner will do to you!

Half-Marathon Training Series #2: The long run

On Saturday, two things were going on in my town:

One, it was the day for the annual Chilifest! I look forward to this day every year, because I love chili.

It’s tough to find a chili that is both spicy enough and has enough flavor. I went to one booth and they said that they had a ghost pepper chili that was very spicy. Since I’m a lover of spice, I told them to bring it on. They acted as if it would blow my socks off. It was basically cold tomato sauce with some ghost peppers thrown in. Yeah, there was some heat, but there was absolutely no other flavor at all. I almost thought it was a joke. That photo in the middle of Zach is as he is eating the only true spicy chili that we found, and that was only after the addition of the “hottest sauce in the universe” — it was incredibly spicy! It burned the back of my throat, and it also had a good flavor. I think that people are afraid to make things too spicy because not everyone is a fan.

After Chilifest, we went to a Marshall University Football game. Zach and I both graduated from Marshall, so we are big Herd fans!

It was a perfect day for football. Early fall heat in the afternoon with a nice chill once the sun set.

I took the first photo and Zach said, “Wait, my eyes weren’t open!” So that is what happened when I took another. haha.

Our team ended up losing  a really close game! We were pretty bummed about that, but we were impressed with how they played.

Somehow on Sunday morning, I felt fine when I woke up so I immediately got ready to go out for my long run of the week. I haven’t had a long run since before we went to the beach, so I was kind of nervous on how I’d handle the 7 miles I had on my training schedule. Which brings me to the point of today’s post.

Half-Marathon Training: The  Long Run

A ‘long run’ when you are training for a distance race is basically the longest run you’ve done on your schedule thus far, plus one mile. Ideally, you do one long run a week during your training. If you’re a beginner and you are training for a half-marathon, most likely the longest run on your schedule will be 10 miles. The first time I trained for a half-marathon, I did 10 miles exactly one week before my race (no tapering). I wouldn’t suggest doing that, but I didn’t really follow a training program per se. I just knew that I was supposed to get my mileage up to 10 miles and, according to the sources I’d read, the adrenaline would carry me through the last three.

Well, that is true, but after 11 miles, I was pretty spent. I’m glad that this time around I’ll be up to at least 12 before the race:

The Long Run can be a bit daunting. I usually have to really psych myself up for them, and (this is a personal preference) do them first thing in the morning or they just don’t work out.

First, let’s talk about the logistics of the long run, starting with why they are important. The point of the long run is to build your endurance for running distance races. You shouldn’t focus on speed on your long runs, in fact, you should try to run them slower than any other training race. The reason for this is that while you will get the same endurance benefits, but you will recover much more quickly so you can continue your training the next week (or even the next day) without taking too much time off.

If you find yourself huffing and puffing (where you wouldn’t be able to carry on a conversation) during your long run, you are going too fast. It’s even important to take water, stretch or walk breaks during your longest runs of the week. The point is to take it easy, but keep running for a sustained amount of time.

Despite the fact that I sort of dread getting started on a long run, I never, ever, ever regret completing one. Sure, there have been times that I’ve not completed my mileage because I just wasn’t feeling it, but I always try to get at least a few miles in. Also, a good tip is that even if you split up your mileage (do half in the morning and half in the evening), it still counts as a long run on your training schedule, but remember that on race day, you won’t be able to take a several hour break at the halfway point.

One point that Jeff Galloway makes when talking about long runs (and one that is often overlooked), is the mental benefit of the long run. There is something about finishing the longest run of your training schedule that really builds you up for the rest of the day. Also, I love ending my week with a long run in the morning, because when you’ve completed 1+ hour of running, you get to be completely lazy for the rest of the day 🙂

What about entertainment on long runs? Well, for me, music is fine for a run that is less than 5 miles, but once I get into higher mileage, music gets a little old. Two things that have really gotten me through longer runs are the NPR  This American Life app (a great radio show about remarkable things in everyday life), and audiobooks. If you have a smart phone or an iPod touch, these two things are right at your fingertips.

While we were at the beach, I read about half of a book that was at our beach house. Of course, I had to leave it behind when I got home, so I picked up the audiobook from the library and I’ve been listening on my longer runs. It’s the perfect way to get in some “reading” while running!

Making do with what I have…

Recently I finally made it to the new local food market in my town: The Wild Ramp.

I wish I had taken photos, but here is how it works. The Wild Ramp is a locally owned, non-profit market. All the produce is local (it seems that the farthest anything had travelled was Athens, OH), and most of the people who work there are volunteers. The produce is grouped by farm, so there may be, for example, tomatoes on several different tables. When you pick out produce, you also have to take a bar code sticker to the register so they will know which farm you are buying from. The best part: $0.90/$1.00 goes directly to the farmer, as opposed to buying local produce at the grocery store, where maybe $0.20-$0.30/$1.00 goes to the farmer.

The most surprising thing that I found was that it wasn’t all produce. There was locally made tofu, veggie burgers, local eggs (they have a place in the front where you can donate your used egg cartons), even local meat! I bought some local tofu, I can’t wait to try it!

I also bought some tomatoes and peppers, and a few other things I can’t mention because they went to my Foodie Pen Pal this month.

For $50 and 1 volunteer hour per month, you can become a “Friend of the Market”, which I absolutely plan on doing. The perk (although, I think the real perk is helping to support a sustainable local resource for healthy food) is that you can call ahead and have your food ready to pick up when you stop by. You also get a subscription to their newsletter. I can’t tell you how excited I am to have this resource so close by! Huntington, WV is really moving up in the healthy food game. I wish Jamie Oliver could see us now!

In other news, my training this week is going well. I’ve had two really good runs in a row, so I  think I’m bouncing back from whatever was holding me back last week. Also, I had a really good night sleep last night, although I don’t know if the reason I slept well is particularly healthy:

After work, Zach and I went grocery shopping. Once I got home and got my run out of the way, we had some dinner and rather than clean the kitchen, I asked Zach if he wanted to go out for a drink. We decided to head over to a nearby bar which has a really nice patio and a couple of our friends were already there. Once we sat down, more and more friends kept showing up! It was a really nice evening, but I stayed up too late and had a few too many drinks. So I think maybe the sleeping well had more to do with being a little tipsy than actual, quality sleep. But it felt great, so that’s that.

Last night made me really look forward to my upcoming beach trip. Everyone who was at the bar last night will be at the beach except for one person, and it made me think about how much I’m going to enjoy sitting on the patio of our beach house, listening to the ocean and talking with my good friends. Just 7 more work days to go!

This morning, because I still don’t have a coffee pot, I made instant coffee from a sample that I got from Taster’s Choice, and it’s not bad! How’s that for making do with what I have?

Maybe I should change the theme of this blog to something movie related? This is my second post in a row with a movie theme.

This weekend, Zach and I headed to Louisville, KY (you guys, this town is amazingly beautiful!) to attend the 11th Annual Lebowski Fest. In case you don’t know, Lebowski Fest was started in 2001 (I guess, since this is the 11th) for a bunch of nerds (I say that in the most adoring manner, considering I am one of those nerds!) to celebrate all things pertaining to the 1998 Coen Brother’s movie, The Big Lebowski. Have you seen it?

Basically, on Friday night, they have a party where they show the movie, and then on Saturday they have a “Garden Party”, with bands, beers and food and then they have a Bowling Party. People dress up like characters from the movie (people get really creative with costumes), they sell Lebowski merchandise. It’s basically just a big party.

I wish I could recap every second of the weekend, but we just did so much. We arrived in Louisville on Saturday (we decided to skip the Friday night festivities), and luckily we have some good friends who live there. They showed us a great time when we weren’t Lebowski’ing. They even knew some people who were working at the Festival, so they showed up at the bowling alley at the end of the night to hang out with us.

Saturday was basically just a party all day long. I ate and drank all day — not the healthiest! But sometimes it’s ok to indulge, and I had to try all the deliciousness that Louisville had to offer. I didn’t take photos of all my food and drinks (trust me, it would overwhelm you), but I’d have to say the two best things I ate on Saturday were the ice cream I had at the Garden Party, and the grilled cheese I got from a food truck outside of the bowling alley at the end of the night:

The ice cream was Dulche de Leche and it was amazing, and the grilled cheese had apples and brie on wheatberry bread. There was also this delicious, spicy and smoky sauce to dip it in.

On Sunday morning, I was feeling a little heavy and a lot hungover. As difficult as it is, I always like to go on for a run when I’m hungover because it makes me feel a lot better. So I chugged some disgusting coffee and headed to the hotel gym to run on the treadmill for a bit. I have to say I was missing the treadmill after a week of the gym being closed. I never thought I would utter those words! I did about 2 miles of speed intervals and then headed back to the room.

Sunday was such a nice day. Since we were tied up with the Festival on Saturday, we spent some time with our friends on Sunday. They made us a really delicious brunch, and then we headed to the Zappos Outlet store. I wasn’t sure what to expect at the store, but I knew I was going to keep my eyes peeled for some running shoes. I am so excited at what I found:

Brooks Pure Flow! These babies retail for $90, the full price tag on them was $76. Everything at the outlet is 50% off the full price tag, so these shoes were only $39! I immediately fell in love. I love the new Brooks Pure line because I’m into the ‘minimalist’ style shoes. I like a light shoe, and while these have a little more padding than I’m used to, they are still super light and flexible. I’m a pretty neutral runner — even in shoes,  I have a natural midfoot strike, and I don’t tend over or underpronate much — and these babies are perfect for me. I actually had my eye on them before I saw them at the outlet — in my exact size — so it was downright serendipitous. I just had to take these babies out for a test drive this morning, even though I was looking forward to returning to my Cardio Sculpt class, so I headed to the gym early and did a fast mile on the treadmill before class. Maybe I’m still on a high from finding these and paying so little for them, but I swear, I was speedy and my run felt easier.

The other thing I bought at the outlet was this:

I’m really excited about this as well, for several reasons. One, because it was originally a $70 suit, and since all the swimwear was 70% off, I got it for $20. Two, I really, really, really need a new sport suit and three, this is cute enough to wear to work out OR on the beach. The photos above came out a little weird color wise, the true color is more like the one on the right than the one on the left.

Since I did so much indulging this weekend, this morning’s breakfast was a little light. I went with an Apple Pie Smoothie from Mama Pea. No pictures, because I drank it out of my camelback bottle and it didn’t look very pretty, but if you click on that link you’ll see the lovely photos Sarah took of it. You really must try this smoothie. It’s very filling, and tastes incredible. Plus, the oatmeal topping adds a little extra oomph to it to carry you through until lunch. Yum!

Here is my workout plan for the week:
Monday: One mile run and Cardio Sculpt class (check!)
Tuesday: Swim one mile/Chest and Back in the weight room
Wednesday: AM: Cardio Sculpt PM: 3 mile run
Thursday: Speed work on the treadmill (will plan out drills Wednesday evening)/Arms and legs in the weight room
Friday: Rest or yoga/Abs
Saturday: Long run — 7 miles since I haven’t done one in a while.
Sunday: Easy run or rest

I’m going to hit it a little harder this week because of the overindulgent weekend. Plus, I am almost officially one month from my week-long beach vacation so it never hurts to keep the nutrition and fitness level up in preparation for that. Not because I think I need to lose weight or “tone up”, but because it’s fun and it increases the anticipation!
