Resolution #1

28 Dec

Good morning! I was feeling pretty terrible all day at work yesterday — sore throat, cough, stuffy nose, tummy issues — yuck.

Despite this mystery illness, I was still looking forward to hitting the treadmill after work because of these:

shoes

Fancy new kicks, huh? I know, I just got the Mizuno Alchemy from the Mezamashii Project, and I adore them, but while I was home for Christmas, my Dad wanted to take me to the local running shop to have my gait analyzed. It’s no secret that I’ve been feeling the pain of running recently, and it’s been a mystery to me because I experienced absolutely no running-related pain for the first two years of my running career. I had a sneaking suspicion that I wasn’t wearing the right shoes, but I didn’t know how to find the right shoes, and I knew that going to a running shop and having them analyze my gait was going to mean $$$. So, when my dad offered to buy me a pair of shoes (it is my birthday, after all), I was happy to accept.

Me and my Dad in our Lloyd’s Running Shop shirts!

My mom recently had knee replacement surgery, and she went to Lloyd’s Running Shop in Beaver, PA to be fitted with the proper sneakers that would keep her steady and not cause her to further injure her knees. My dad was so impressed that he wanted me to check it out. On Christmas Eve, we dashed over about an hour before they closed. Lloyd himself watched me walk across the store. He asked if it had been my left knee that had been bothering me, and I said it was my right. Then he asked if I ever had any ankle pain when I run, which I said I did on my left ankle. Apparently I supinate more on that side, which is why he thought that was the knee that was giving me trouble. According to Lloyd, I have a strong arch, which causes me to run on the sides of my feet. The goal was to find a shoe that would correct that.

It only took about 10 minutes tops, and I was in the Gel Nimbus 14. I tried another pair first, but I felt like there was too much of a lift in the heel — which is why I’ve never bought a pair of Asics before — but with these I didn’t feel that.

So, back to yesterday’s run!

As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been running on the treadmill at a 0 incline to try to prevent knee pain. I know it’s bad for my shins, but I also didn’t want to reinjure my IT band, so it was my only option.

Yesterday, I experimented with incline and speed:

Sorry for the horrid phone picture (I was still walking when I snapped it), but the point is — it was my fastest run, and I kept the incline the whole time — NO knee pain. Here’s what I did:

workout

For the Warm Up, I walked while varying my incline between 5.0 and 9.0. The cool down was nine minutes of jogging, slowly transitioning to walking. It was perfect! It kept me engaged, and it challenged me.

Now to the New Year’s Resolution part of this post.

From now until December 31st, I’m going to post a new resolution for 2013 here.

Resolution #1:
When someone does something to annoy me, or I get mad at someone, I will immediately think of three things that I love about that person.

Not at all fitness related, but important. I always want to remember the good about people. I’m sure I do a ton of things that annoy my loved ones, but they love me anyway, so from here on out, whenever someone does something that annoys me, I will immediately think of three things I love about that person. I tried that recently and it really worked — annoyance completely gone, never to be heard from again, so as I enter into 2013, the year I will be married, I want to always, always find the good in people — especially my future husband — because I want to treasure those relationships.

Question of the day:
What’s one of your New Year’s Resolutions?

Christmas 2012: A photo Re-cap

27 Dec

I’m sitting at my desk at work, feeling a little bummed out that the holidays are over.

My sister and our cousins in the Christmas jams I bought for us. Twins!

I’m also feeling overwhelmed – by work, unread blogs (I must read them all!), New Year’s Eve planning, 2013 resolution planning…. There is a lot to get done!

But, despite the stress of the post-Christmas, pre-New Year’s activities, I’ve got a huge smile on my face. Because I had the best Christmas (and birthday!) that I’ve ever had!

My Christmas and Birthday gifts! I'm a lucky girl!

It was so nice to have Zach come with me to visit my family, but I’m also grateful that he and his family will soon be my family too!

My future husband and some of my future in-laws (we’re missing Zach’s mom and step-dad)!

In a testament to how great my “new” family is, my Sister-in-law, Courtney (on the left in that photo) took care of our kitties while we were in Pittsburgh, and she surprised us with this photo on Christmas morning:

Isn’t that awesome!? She bought them a cat tree and surprised them with it on Christmas morning. It made me feel so happy and loved that she made sure my cats were having a good time while I was away.

Of course, not all the cats were impressed:

Gross, I know, but also hilarious. Tuscany is a little hard to please.

All in all, I had a fabulous week. There is nothing in life better than having a loving family, and this year I’m so very grateful to be gaining a whole extra family to call my own.

Question of the day:
How was your Christmas!?

Christmas is in the Air!

19 Dec

Despite still fighting this stupid head cold, I popped out of bed this morning to hit the gym. With the addition of cardio to the LiveFit Trainer, my gym sessions have become about an hour-90 minutes long, so I have to get to the gym as soon as it opens at 6:00 AM.

Here’s what I did today:

workout day 36

I am running out of ways to share my workouts with you in a creative manner. Even I’m getting bored of showing you similar workouts over and over again. This LiveFit Trainer is effective, and I like it, but it’s pretty repetitive. I used to be the girl who liked to switch it up a lot (I still am!) so I’ll be glad in a week when I get to start doing HIIT and different exercises.

When I got to the cardio portion of my workout, I did not feel like running. I’m still feeling under the weather and just didn’t feel like wheezing through a run. So I walked hills and made up a pretty fun workout (if I do say so myself!):

run walk

*If I weren’t having IT Band pain, I would have done the run intervals with a 1.0 incline.

It was a fun way to keep alert on the treadmill and not get bored. Plus, even though I wasn’t running, I felt like I got a great workout.

Do you like my winter-themed graphics? I’m really starting to get into the Christmas spirit. This morning at work, a group of 2nd and 3rd graders came into the library where I work to sing Christmas Carols:
carolers

They were so cute! I absolutely loved listening to their carols. Adorable!

Today was also our office Christmas Luncheon. We all bring in a potluck dish to share:

Christmas lunch

Oh man. So much yummy food. I didn’t go too overboard, and I only had one dessert. So far! My favorite thing in the world is the veggie pizza that people make, that is like a biscuit crust topped with cream cheese and cut up, raw veggies. It’s so good! I had two slices!

I’m getting really excited also because tomorrow is my last day of work before the holidays! Tomorrow night, a bunch of friends will meet up and go out to dinner to celebrate my birthday (because Zach and I will be in Pittsburgh on Christmas Day, and everyone will be with their families anyway!), and Friday is Zach and Courtney’s Dad’s wedding! Then on Saturday morning, Zach and I will head to Pittsburgh to see my family! I haven’t seen them in almost a year, which makes me almost cry every time I think about it, but I’m very, very, very excited to see everyone soon!

Question of the Day:
Will you be travelling for the holidays this year?

What I Ate Wednesday!

12 Dec

As I type this, I’m on hold with Customer Service, because I ordered some Christmas gifts from a website and accidentally didn’t change the shipping address to my parent’s house (where I will be starting the 22nd!)

I try my hardest to avoid going to stores (other than local businesses) because I hate the crowds, but apparently calling Customer Service is just as bad! I’ve been sitting on the phone for close to 20 minutes now!

On to the post! I thought I’d do another WIAW, this time the right way (I documented yesterday’s eats)!

WIAWbutton

After the oatmeal debacle of last week, I’ve been back to eating eggs for breakfast:

IMAG0789

..plus a piece of sausage and half of a whole-wheat bagel with neufchatel. I really think that the Kroger brand 100% whole wheat bagels are the best. Have you had them?

Lunch yesterday was so so good. I had some manager’s special Brussels Sprouts in my fridge that needed to be cooked, so I sauteed them and half a sweet potato in some oil. I put it on top of some leftover rice from our taco night the other night, and squirted a ton of Sriracha all over it:

2012-12-11 12.20.33

It was a huge, delicious and healthy lunch! Win! I followed it up with a Kind of Healthy cookie! This lunch really powered  me through the afternoon. I usually get a huge case of the 3 pm munchies, but I was pretty satisfied all afternoon. I did munch on an apple around 4:30, because Zach had a haircut after work and I knew dinner would be a little later.

We had burger night for dinner! It’s one of my favorite nights (I think Zach agrees). We always have baked french fries, because we love them. I tried a new veggie burger recipe last night. I had some already cooked lentils in the fridge, so I just ground them up in the food processor, added egg, Parmesan cheese, spices and breadcrumbs. It made a very dense burger:

2012-12-11 18.35.48

…with roasted Brussels a beer on the side! We watched some Christmas movies last night — two of my favorites: Love Actually (soooo good!) and Bad Santa (hilarious!) Zach’s sister Courtney and her boyfriend Justin came over, and their brought their Doberman “puppy”, Margot!

2012-12-11 21.13.32

I wish this picture weren’t so dark, but we had the mood lighting going. Having Margot at our apartment is kind of like having a bull in a china shop. She’s still a puppy, but she’s as big as a full grown dog, so she just bounces around like crazy and it’s pretty funny. My cats aren’t very dog-friendly (I’m hoping this will change when we get a small puppy and it’s around all the time), so we put up a baby gate to restrict Margot to the living room. She brings a toy, and she wants you to chase her, so when we watch a movie, she spends most of her time bringing her toy to each individual person and setting it on them. As soon as you try to grab it, she takes it back and runs. If you really ignore her, she will place the toy in your hand to really try to get the game going. It’s adorable.

So, all in all it was a good night.

Question of the Day:
What’s your favorite Christmas movie!?

All I want for Christmas

6 Dec

I’ve seen a few bloggers posting their Christmas wish lists, and it seemed like a fun thing to do! I have a Pinterest Board where I pin things that I come across them, but this reminds me of Oprah’s Favorite Things, except I don’t actually have any of these things, and there will be less screaming.

wish list

From L-R:

  1. Harry and David’s Triple Treat Fruit Classic: Oh, those pears! Plus, who doesn’t love fruit? I know I do!
  2. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 13: I’ve recently learned that I need more stability in a running shoe than I thought.
  3. Mizuno Breath Thermo Fleece Glove: I need gloves in even the highest of cool temperatures. My hands get so cold! These sound perfect for me.
  4. Mizuno Wave Alchemy 12: Supportive and lightweight!? Sign me up.
  5. Race Medal/Bib Display: Love this! Most of these don’t have a space for the bibs, too.
  6. Reebok Crossfit 1/4 zip warm up jacket: Love, love, love this jacket!! I love how the thumb holes are separate from the top layer of the jacket. TOO cute!
  7. Garmin Forerunner 10 GPS watch: Love that they made this less-complicated (and cheaper) version of their Forerunner!

What’s on your Christmas wish list?
