Hello, Friday!

7 Dec

Today’s post is going to be a mish-mash of randomness!

You know that feeling you get after a tough weights workout, when the muscle(s) you’ve worked feel like jelly and you just know that you’ll be sore the next day? That happened to me yesterday on leg day. All day, anytime I moved around (yesterday was a crazy day at work, so I was moving around a lot), I felt that jelly feeling. Then, by the time I was cooking dinner last night the first of the muscle ache started to set in. By the time I sat down after dinner, I was in full-on sore muscle mode!

Because of the sore muscles, I was glad to wake up early (even after a bit of fitful night of sleep — sigh) to hit the 6:15 AM yoga class at the gym. I did my Day 23 workout of LiveFit after yoga:

day 23

Back and biceps! I felt pretty strong today, even using 15 lb dumbbells for the hammer curls. I’m definitely upping my weight, and I feel stronger every day. Since I was at the gym a little longer than usual, I had to rush home, shower and cook breakfast super quickly so I could get to work on time. My breakfast turned out great though:

breakfast

I basically just warmed up some roasted veggies (sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower) topped with a little cheese, put a slice of turkey bacon on top, and then made a dippy (aka overeasy) egg to go on top. Then I drizzled it with Sriracha, the condiment of the Gods. I paired it with a piece of whole wheat toast. Oh my yum. I wanted to make the egg overeasy so when I cut into it, the yolk would drip down onto the veggies. Good decision. I also ate one of the best pears ever. I used to be all about apples, but lately pears have my heart.

Speaking of breakfast, yesterday’s oats didn’t hold me over long. I was digging for a snack by 10 AM 😦 It’s such a bummer, because I really love oatmeal!

This weekend will be filled with fitness! I have two workouts planned for my LiveFit trainer, but I also plan to hit up my favorite Boot Camp class, which is held every other Saturday at  my gym, and Ashley’s yoga class, of course. I also plan on cheating on my no cardio rule to go for a very easy jog on Sunday if the weather is nice. Afternoon jogs when we’re having cool weather in December just can’t be avoided, I’m afraid!

Today, Haley at the Saucy Apple posted a great blog about how to make your weekend seem longer. This post really struck a chord with me, because I tend to get a little stressed on the weekends. There is so much to do, so little time to do it, and then Sunday comes around and I spend the whole day feeling bummed out that the weekend is over. But recently, I’ve been trying to really live in the moment on the weekends and, as my good friend Ashley said, “Not let my Monday ruin my Sunday”. It’s great advice, and every time I find myself getting the Sunday Blues, I remind myself of that little adage and it helps a lot.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Question of the Day:
I need to make a vegetarian main course for my book club this weekend, any suggestions?

Happy Birthday, Zach!

10 Sep

Yesterday was my fiance’s birthday!

Happy Birthday Honey!

Isn’t he handsome? I wanted to make his birthday special, but because we just got back from vacation, I wanted to stay close to home. So, on Friday night we went to dinner with some of his old friends from high school, then on Saturday we went to dinner with our friends in town. On Sunday, I hosted a football party for his Fantasy Football league (including a few others). We had lots of great food:

Looks awful, but it’s sooo good!

Buffalo chicken dip (made by Zach’s sister). This stuff is addictive, delicious and probably not health food. Ok, it’s definitely not health food. But oh is it good.

I had never made a meatball before yesterday, but it wasn’t that hard! Zach specifically requested “the meatballs in the crockpot”. After doing some research, I realized that meant meatballs in a crockpot with sauce made from grape jelly and chili sauce. Courtney said she usually buys frozen meatballs, but they didn’t have any at the store when I went so I decided to make my own. It wasn’t as hard as I thought, and the meatballs turned out great.

Football staple.

I also had never prepared chicken wings prior to yesterday. I made a copycat sauce of the Buffalo Wild Wings Spicy Garlic sauce (my favorite). I baked the wings in the sauce, but next time I’ll bake the wings separately and then toss them in the sauce. They were good, but the sauce did weird things when cooked.

You can’t have wings without raw veggies and creamy ranch dip. I cut up the veggies myself, which saved some money. I had  half a carton of plain yogurt in my fridge so I made my own yogurt ranch too. It was very good. Everyone made fun of my labels though. I think I spend too much time on Pinterest.

Of course, what is a birthday party without cake? I made this yellow cake from a box mix, and bought the frosting. This is the first time I’ve ever made a layer cake though. The presentation isn’t great (the frosting on the plate in this photo is driving me crazy, but I was holding hungry party-goers at bay while I took this picture), but it sure was good.

So, as you can see we had a very healthy day yesterday.

Just kidding! But it was delicious.

Today for lunch, I took some of the leftover raw veggies, steamed them, and tossed them with some whole-wheat pasta, olive oil and parmesan cheese. Much healthier! (Although I did follow it up with a slice of leftover cake).

I think Zach had a great birthday. His birthday present was two tickets to see our Alma Mater play next weekend, so the birthday festivities continue next weekend!

This, or that?

10 Aug

I’ve seen this post making the rounds in the fit-blogging community, so I thought I’d cop out of an actual posttry it out! Would you rather….

  1. Run in the freezing temps or heat and humidity? — Heat and Humidity! The cold air hurts my lungs. In a perfect world, I’d live in an area where it was fall 365 days a year, though 🙂
  2. Have washboard abs or flat abs? — Flat abs, please! A little definition is nice, but I wouldn’t want too much.
  3. Dr. Oz or The Doctors? — I don’t really know, but I think I’m going to have to go with The Doctors. I used to be a huge fan of Dr. Oz until I recently learned that most of his “advice” isn’t too scientific lately. I’m all for alternative forms of medicine, but I’ve heard his endorsements and advice are too closely related, if you know what I mean. I’ll need to do a bit more research, but for now I’m taking Dr. Oz’s advice with a grain of salt.
  4. Cardio or Strength? — Oh, come on! I can’t choose! I guess I’ll choose cardio since I love running so much, but this is unfair 🙂
  5. Cravings, Protein or Carbs? — Carbs! Sweet, delicious carbs.
  6. Jillian or Bob? Definitely Bob. I actually have and enjoy both of their workout DVD’s, but Bob’s are more my style. It’s a tough choice, but how could I resist this:
  7. Frozen Yogurt or Ice Cream? Fro-yo for the win. I’m just loving these self-serve places with various toppings.
  8. To train: Upper body or lower body? I prefer upper body. Lunges are the devil. But I do them!
  9. Protein powder or food with protein? Obviously, food! But a good, healthy protein powder with whole ingredients is nice as well.
  10. Lunges or squats? I could squat all day long, but I hate lunges.
  11. Sweet or salty?love salt. I’m a salt fiend.
  12. Workout attire: Cute or Comfy? Why not both? But I guess I’ll choose comfy, as I actually can’t afford to buy the cutest stuff out there. Lululemon, I adore you, but you cost too much. I could never justify spending $80+ on a pair of pants that I’m going to sweat in. This is where Marshall’s comes in handy. I find really cute, quality stuff there for cheap.
  13. Body Pump or Heavy Lifting? Heavy lifting, mainly because I’ve never taken a Body Pump class. But I’d love to try!
  14. Yoga or Pilates? I like both, but I’m more of a yogi, so Yoga!
  15. Nike or Adidas? I’ve been both in the past. I ran my first half-marathon in Adidas, and then my next pair of running shoes were black and pink Adizeros, I liked them ok, but then I got the Nike Free Runs, which I love running in, although I’ve recently semi-retired them for my Brooks Pure Flows.

Black/pink Adizeros and Green/Grey Nike Free Run 2.

  16. Running outdoors or on the treadmill? Obviously, outdoors is ideal. However, the treadmill is invaluable when it comes to speedwork. I’m terrible at keeping up my pace on my own.
  17. Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s? Well, considering my town has neither…. haha. Trader Joe’s though. I’ve been to both, and Whole Foods, while awesome, is very expensive.
  18. Summer or Winter Olympics? 100% Summer. Winter Olympics is pretty boring to me, other than hockey.
  19. Wine or Beer? I am a beer girl! But I love champagne as well.
  20. Steamed or Roasted veggies? Roasted, obviously. Steamed veggies are alright, but roasting brings out a great flavor.

Question of the Day: Tell me some of your picks!
