Just a Quickie

29 Oct

I don’t have much to talk about today, so I’m just going to give you a little peek at some photos from this weekend:

If you can guess what our couple’s costume was based on those two photos, you get a prize.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a photo of Zach and I in our costumes, so I’m going to have to wait until others come out of the woodwork and steal them , haha. The engagement shoot went really well, I think, although I haven’t seen those photos either. The rain/wind was kind of a bummer (especially since my hair looked awesome — thanks, Courtney!), but it turned out going smoothly.

As for that wine, the sole reason I bought it was because it had a coupon for $1 off a pumpkin when you bought it! It was meant for Book Club, but I ended up forgetting that Book Club starts at 5, not 6, so in my haste to get there when I got a “Where are you!?” text, I forgot it at home.

I did a lot of baking this weekend — I made some delicious (and pretty healthy) pumpkin bread, and a delicious (and not healthy at all) apple tart for book club. Both turned out great.

Question of the Day:
What did you do this weekend? What was your costume?

I’ve Gone Pumpkin Crazy

3 Oct

Well, it finally happened. I’ve gone pumpkin crazy. I went grocery shopping yesterday, and despite forgetting some pretty essential items (oh, just bread, a new filter for the Brita pitcher and hot sauce!)  I did manage to get the essential pumpkin items:

Plus 12 cans of pumpkin puree. I’m obsessed.

Aldi has all the pumpkin things. The reason I forgot so many items is because I was literally mesmerized. Zach is lucky that I didn’t spend all of our money there! They had pumpkin spice milk, pumpkin bagels, pumpkin cream cheese, pumpkin spice pancakes….the list goes on. I could barely focus.

I had a great day yesterday! After posting my October Goals, I was motivated to get up super early and get a strength workout in. It was rainy, so I decided to do the workout from home. I did a full-body superset workout that I found in the Oxygen Fat Loss issue. Then, I did this Gangnam Style dance from Cassey at Blogilates twice. It was SO FUN, and definitely got me sweating and my heart rate up. I highly suggest you try it if you’re as obsessed with the song as I am.

Then, after work, I texted my friend Ashley (who just got a membership at the Y! Yay gym friends!) to see if she wanted to either run outside or on the treadmill with me. She chose the treadmill, so I did a 4-mile speed workout (8 400 repeats at 5k pace alternating with slow jog or walk 400s). It took me about 42 minutes. I went straight from the gym to the grocery store, so that’s probably why I ended up with a bunch of pumpkin flavored treats and no bread.

The sky was GORGEOUS yesterday!

After all of that, I didn’t get home until almost 8, so Zach and I had some frozen pizza (healthy, I know), a glass of Malbec and watched a movie called Bernie:

I definitely recommend this movie! It was based on a true story, and a LOT different than I expected from the trailer. It was quite good.

After a nice day of healthy eating and good fitness, I failed once again to make it to the gym this morning. 😦 I really don’t know what my problem is with getting up lately. I actually got out of bed, put on my gym clothes and then, just took them back off and went back to bed. I was just so tired. But then thing is, I didn’t actually go back to sleep. I read for a while and then got up to do some dishes and cleaning up. Maybe I just need to get up a little earlier, to allow myself to wake up before I head to the gym? I used to have my alarm set for 5:25 and then be out the door without fail by 6 AM. Or maybe it’s just that it’s dark in the mornings again and I’m not quite used it yet. I’ll try setting my alarm a little earlier tomorrow because I absolutely have to go to the gym in the morning tomorrow. Today, I can go for a run after work, but tomorrow after work, Zach and I have big plans!

Tomorrow, Macy’s is having an event where if you go and create your bridal registry, you can win one of hundreds of gift cards, ranging in value from $100 – $1,000! I figured, what better time to get started on our wedding registry? Zach seemed interested in the idea, so we registered for the event and we’ll head over tomorrow after work. I also have a coupon for Ruby Tuesday (I am in love with their salad bar), so we’re making a date night of it. I think I’ll like registering. It’s like shopping without actually spending money — perfect for me.

One more thing I wanted to mention before this  post gets ridulously long is a little bit about that pumpkin cider up there. I had some with lunch today, and while I was drinking it, I checked out the nutrition facts:

First of all, love the flip-top bottle. I’ve had this twice (had about half the bottle at this point) and it stays nice and fizzy in that bottle. Secondly, I was quite impressed with the nutrition facts. The one thing I’ve noticed about the products at Aldi, they typically have a lot less ingredients than similar things at Kroger, and I can actually pronounce all the ingredients. I always thought of Aldi as a discount store, and while it is, it probably has a lot more in common with Trader Joe’s. Also, this bottle has 2-110 calorie servings, but I have found that a smaller serving is more my style with this. While it is delicious, it’s also pretty strong and I probably wouldn’t want to drink a whole lot of it at once. Approve!

So, send me good vibes that I get my workout in tomorrow morning!!

Question of the Day:
What’s your favorite pumpkin-related item? (You aren’t allowed to say you don’t like pumpkin, because I might die)

Sip Wine Bar, Huntington, WV

27 Sep

Good morning!
I have been the worst lately about getting up and going to the gym in the mornings. I could make excuses all day long, but basically it’s because I’m tired in the morning. I don’t know why. I feel like I’m sleeping well, but obviously something is off. I need to figure out what it is, and get back to my regular schedule.

But, all in all I’m not doing too badly on the fitness front. I’ve been off since I got back from vacation, and that’s bad because the half-marathon is only slightly more than a month away. This week feels like it has flown by, and my training has suffered. I did wake up early for a weights class on Monday, and I actually ran 4 miles after work as well, but then I took Tuesday off. Yesterday, I didn’t get out of bed and go to the gym, but I did get a nice speed work treadmill run in after work:

In typical fashion, I can’t get through a treadmill run without accidentally stopping the treadmill or having to dash to the bathroom and it resets.

I did 400 repeats at 5k pace, and I took 200 m walking breaks after every repeat (hence the slowish pace). But I got through it! I really hope this half marathon goes well for me. I was feeling so great about training before I left for the beach, and now it’s a struggle to make myself run.

After my run, I met up with my lady friends Susie and Mandee to hit the local wine bar, Sip. My neighbor Ashley (who is leaving in two days to go to Costa Rica for a whole month to get certified to teach yoga! Lucky!) works there  and so does Susie’s boyfriend, Shane. This was my first Sip experience.

I just love the decor of this place, don’t you? We sat at the bar so as to be near Ashley and Shane, and just chatted. They have small plates, and you can order wine in flights, which  has three different 2 oz servings or as a 6 oz glass of one wine. I decided to go with the flights, because wine isn’t cheap and I wanted to try as much as I could for the money I was spending there. I started out with the Sparkling Flight:

I ❤ sparkling wine! (I call it all champagne because I’m uncultured)

My favorite of the three was the Gruet Extra Dry. It had a really full flavor for a dry sparkling wine. The Rose wasn’t as sweet as I imagined it would be (I think everything pink is going to be sweet). They were all very good.

Next up, I decided to go with the Unusual Red Flight:

This was my favorite, by far. I didn’t take a great photo of the descriptions, but the Ken Forrester Pinotage claimed to have ‘nuances of bacon’ and as weird as that sounded, it was great! It had a bacony, smoky finish that I really liked. The other two wines were rich and complex. I highly recommend all three of these wines.

I was only planning on getting two flights, which is why I had the unusual red, but Susie had just gotten another glass of wine, and I was a little tipsy so I felt like having a third flight. At this point, please remember these glasses are only 2 oz. glasses, so I’m really not going overboard here! Here is a photo comparison of the glasses to my giant engagement ring (haha) so you can see how small they were:

So even though I drank 9 tiny glasses of wine, it was really the equivalent of three regular glasses of wine. I went with the unusual white flight for my third flight:

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that my photos get worse as time passes. In retrospect, I should have done sparkling, unusual white, THEN unusual red, but oh well. My favorite of these three was the Gewurztraminer. It was delicious! It had a floral bouquet (??) — I’m not very good with wine descriptions, but it was much more complex than your usual white.

In addition to the wine, we also shared two cheese plates, a bread plate and a small piece of cheesecake. Good thing I went running first!

I would highly recommend Sip! It’s a little on the pricey side, but as a once-in-a-while thing, I think it’s a great night out.
